Football Training - Long Range Passing

As players develop and mature, they will need football training sessions that assist them developing a range of passing skills. There is a comprehensive football training section in the members’ area of the site on short range passing and support. But, players will also need specific football training sessions and drills that help them practice and understand the different techniques and decisions needed for successful long passing.

In a game, if a long pass is made, then that pass will need by pass opposition players: Be technically correct: Will need a target to hit – either a player or space -  and will require support as the ball travels. Therefore, it is important that football training sessions designed to improve long range passing incorporate all these factors.

Long Range Passing – Football Training Tips

  • Football Training Tip 1 - Control the ball out of the feet and in front. Sometimes the player might make a decision to strike the ball first time and not control the ball!
  • Football Training Tip 2 - Head up to picture the pass – look where the player to pass to is: Where the space to pass to is: Where the opposition are and how this effects the type of long pass
  • Football Training Tip 3 - Angled approach to the ball – maybe 45 degrees to the ball
  • Football Training Tip 4 - Non kicking foot – slightly behind and away from the ball
  • Football Training Tip 5 - Use the laces - the instep of the foot to strike the ball
  • Football Training Tip 6 - For low driven passes - strike the middle  / centre of the ball – head and body over the ball and kicking foot follow through to the target, keeping the toe pointed for as long as possible on the follow through
  • Football Training Tip 7 - For lofted passes – strike the bottom half of the ball / under the ball / centre of the ball – lean back slightly and kicking foot follow through to the target, keeping the toe pointed for as long as possible on the follow through
  • Football Training Tip 8 - For swerved passes – player should a much more angled approach to the ball: strike the outside of the ball with the big or little toe: The follow through goes from out to in – hooking the ball
  • Football Training Tip 9 - Player receiving the ball must be on their toes, communicating and move to receive the pass.
  • Football Training Tip 10 – Player receiving the long pass will need support from other players. Support should happen as the ball is travelling
