Long Range Shooting – Football Coaching

Every player and coach enjoys football coaching sessions that develop shooting and finishing skills. The techniques needed to improve long range shooting are hard ones to master. The fact that players shoot from distance mean that power needs to be generated and when players go for power, accuracy is lost and shots tend to go high, wide and miss a lot.

To develop football coaching sessions that will improve players’ abilities and confidence to shoot from distance a football coach needs to encourage the players to be confident and positive, to take a chance with the shot. Once this has been achieved the football coaching session should focus on players understanding and employing the correct techniques for long range shooting.

To help the players with these techniques, the football coaching session should include lots of realistic long range shooting opportunities for the players and the players should be given lots of opportunities to shoot. It is no good a player having one shot every ten minutes; they need lots of realistic long range shooting opportunities in the football coaching session.

In real match situations, there will be defensive opposition players who will attempt to stop shooting opportunities. Therefore, all football coaching sessions should include realistic game like situations, where attacking players are encouraged to make decisions, not only on the techniques required for shooting and finishing, but also decisions based upon the position of their team mates, defenders and the goalkeeper.
