In the past I've found one of the easiest ways to raise money was to drive around the local vicinity of my club and write down the names and addresses of the local businesses. I then composed a letter, on Club letterheaded paper of course, and sent it to each of them. We got a better than average response, raising almost a thousand pounds on one occasion.

It was a very cost effective way of raising money. I think the key to its success was the fact that we asked for ANY money donation, no matter how big or small. We detailed costs in the letter too, so they could see what their donation would be buying.

For example: Practice balls 10 pounds each, Match balls @ 30 pounds. Right up to the cost of a new kit and what a kit sponsor would get for his donation.

Of course we also pointed out that this was THEIR local community and helping the club meant providing a safe and useful environment for youngsters a few hours per week.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

If you're based in the UK there's a very good fundraising scheme - the weather lottery - it's endorsed by my County FA (Sheffield & Hallamshire) and basically there are a couple of different draws to attract players but at its most basic for £1 a week you get entered into 4 daily draws (Monday to Thursday) with a chance to win £10K and a proportion of the stake money comes through to your club - you can track winners etc online via the company website and the site reckons that if you can get a couple of hundred lines a week being played then your club benefits by as much as £9K per year which is s decent sum for most clubs. We have adopted the sceme at my club but in truth our launch has been a bit low key and we need to push it a bit harder.

Bagpacks are a good fundraiser as well - plus there's the route Archie laid out above.

We also did the legwork and became a registered charity, which opens all sorts of additional funding streams - it hasn't affected the way that the club works because we always had a policy of not refusing players due to lack of ability (we invite them to train but if not strong enough we don't progress them to the playing sides). We merely formalised that policy to show that we were not an elitist organisation and we've just succeeded in obtaining our first £10K grant for next season's funding.

Hope this helps

Wow! Well done Donny. Mucho respect.

Where does one go on-line to find more about the 'weather lottery'?

The selfish answer would be to tell you to go to our club homepage Doncaster Rovers Belles Junior Section and click the link which explains the differing draws and allows you to sign up online via direct debit etc; however you can go direct into the company (weatherfunds) at Sports Club Fundraising, Fundraising for your Sports Club with The Weather Lottery which will enable you to set up your own account for your club.

The company provide the links for your website so you get a nice professional looking advert on youtr site which helps to draw people in. If you want to do the traditional leaflet distribution the company are even prepared to run a few hundred off for you (and impressively the turnaround is only a couple of days - the leaflets include your own club graphics etc!!)

In truth I realy don't see a down side to the weather lottery - I've previously looked at hooking our site up to one of those internet shopping site that gives you cashback for each purchase but after conducting a dip test with some of the parents I wasn't happy with a kids football club carrying adverts and shopping links for adult orientated material such as *** toys or suggestive lingerie and because the shopping company wouldn't let me pick and choose the shops that we could link to I politely refused their advances... they told me that they would develop a more kid friendly version and get back to me but that over a year ago - I don't think that we need the money quite that badly!!
