Default under 11's girls

hi col

i coach under 12's but help out with under 11's girls teams, i try and make all sessions fun and interesting so they don't lose interest. i find that if a girls is playing football its because they want to and not just because their mates are so they are ready to learn. no matter what session i do i always finish it with a fun game like shooting at cones getting points for each one knocked over the team with most points wins and gets to pick a forfit for the other team. this also improves their accuracy at the same time.

I had U10 girls this year. The game they loved the most, in fact the one game that they would play by themselves when they got together, was smashball. We had a big wall and the girls line up with the first player taking the ball and smashing it into the wall. Second girl has to get to the ball before it stops and hit it back at the wall. And so on. This game is fun, regardless of whether you have boys or girls, but for the girls, it gives them the confidence to really strike the ball. They learn that if they hit the ball, it will go somewhere. It is very disempowering for kids to kick at the ball and not have it go very far.

The other great thing about the game is that it can be adapted to the skill level of your players. You can limit the total number of touches to three: one to trap, one to advance it forward, one for the kick. This is the point my girls got to this year. You can make it elimination: if the players don't get the ball to the wall within three touches or if the ball stops before they get to it, they get a strike. Three strikes and they have to sit down. You could also do teams, which fellow coaches have told me works, but it never did for me. Then, when the kids get better, paint a line on the wall and all kicks have to be below the line. Eventually you can play the game with overturned benches.

I also do a lot of keep-away, and the girls especially liked this.

Oh, and welcome to GrassRootsCoaching, colchippy. Hope you have fun with the whole coaching gig.
