Default Best Coaching Books

What are your favorite books for coaching, whether soccer or sports in general, or even working with youth. If we get enough good suggestions, we'll sticky the thread.

Default My Favourites

Some of the books I keep coming back to are:-

The art of defending Part 1 (and part 2) by Wayne Harrison
Part 1 book starts with 1v1 through to 8v8. Part 2 book covers phase of play and 11v11.

Coaching the English Premier League 4-4-2 by David Williams
An excellent book well written with lots of diagrams.

Recognizing the moment to play by Wayne Harrison
Apparently Jose Mourinho has this one in his collection. It is also on the FA's suggested reading list.

Game Situations for soccer by Wayne Harrison
Themed exercises & SSG up to 6v6.

The soccer goalkeeping handbook by Alex Welsh
Great for teaching the basics.

Goalkeeping Drills Vol 1. by Gerd Thissen & Klaus Rollgen.
Covering handling the ball, warming up, general exercises, catching technique, agility, endurance, take-off strength and reaction speed. Good for all levels and ages.

There are many others I like but you cannot go wrong with anything from Wayne Harrison or David Williams in my opinion.

Default Where?

Can you get these from any book shop or are they online? If they are online, where? I've used Amazon a couple of times but am less than impressed with their website and delivery efforts!

www.reedsawin.com is pretty good for soccer books, DVDs and equipment. It's not the best website but its ok.

I've always had good luck with Amazon, myself, but I just checked Barnes and Noble and the Wayne Harrison books, for example are available for about $14 each and they have used ones as well.

Edit: just checked and found that the Harrison books are Reedswain...

Just finished with Harrison's Recognizing the Moment to Play, and I have to say, it is quite good. Provides nice simple progressions from 2 v 2 up to full field. I really needed to have read this at the beginning of the season, but you could build a season-long series of practices whatever your kids' level.

Thanks for the recommendation, Uncle Nobby.

Got two for Crimbo - both interesting reads with things I can definitely take and adapt for my teams. They are

Soccer Systems and Strategies - Bangbos and Peitersen

Written by 2 former Danish national coaches - with a lot on the role of the coach in training, before, during and after a game.

The Coaching Philosophies of Louis van Gaal and the Ajax Coaches

Quality read.

The guys name in the first book is Bangsbo, and he's apparently quite highly regarded. Has a soccer fitness book that is supposed to be the best out there.

I have 3 of the Bangsbo books:-

Soccer Systems & Strategies
Offensive Soccer Tactics
Defensive Soccer Tactics

All very good books with lots of coaching advice, but I found them heavy reading and prefer lighter styles.
