Thumbs up 5 - 4 - 1

Has anyone used the above system? I am going to use it on Sunday and would like some feed back if anyone has any ideas. The team we are playing have a strong midfield / striker. Any help would be apreciated.

What level are you playing at?

I would have to be coaching at a pretty high level of competitiveness, before I changed my formation/s to counter the opposition. I think it is more important to concentrate on how you play, and let the opposition worry about you.

As for countering a useful striker, I would be looking to cut off his source, and be asking my mdfield to work to achieve this.

Watching pro teams who use this formation, they seem to counter attack with it. Moving the ball quickly forward once in possesion.

I've tried once or twice to change to this formation, particularly when we have been leading with a short time of the game left.
I wonder are you planning on using a flat back 5, if so do you have two players marking their strikers?
If its flat back 4 with one in front then another flat 4 in midfield this could work well, as long as neither central midfielder drops into the sweeper position.

I would definitely try it out, but I wouldn't blame it for not working first time round, especially if players have not used it before.

I have run it as a 3-2-4-1, we played low pressure (between top of 18 "D" and top of center circle "D", our system when the opposition has the ball central, we compress within the width of the 18 yd box with zonal marking, once the ball is played wide, we go high press on every player in that area, pressing the ball carrier to the line.
Once we have possession we hit the forward or the central mid early with the intent of a quick switch with the outside mid and outside back on the reverse.
If you are going to play a 5-4-1, you're players are going to be under alot of pressure for long periods, it can get frustrating for them and holding positions can become an issue, but if they hold there nerve, it is an extremely frustrating system to play against, long periods of possession without anything to show is demoralizing and just as frustrating for the offense.
It is a good counter-attacking system especially if you have speed for the counter.
