Hi,
I coach an U12 team, we've moved to 11-a-side this season and they are doing well, one problem I'm geting though is that under pressure my MF & wingers track back to the point that they are standing on the toes of my defenders. When we clear the ball it comes pinging straight back in as there is no-one to pick up the clearances. I'm pleased the lads are putting loads of effort in coming back and I don't want to actively discourage this tracking back, but how do I keep the space? Would appreciate any ideas / training sessions? Thanks |

Tony75,
Thanks for the idea - its given me good food for thought - we play a session called wingers, were there is a marked 5M channel each side of the pitch which only the winger is allowed in (the winger is on the side in possession). One snag we sometines hit with this session is that the lads 'drift' to the winger with the ball and follow him up and down. I'm going to try and combine this with your idea to develop space and passing - possibly progress to two-touch (always willing to try new sessions with the lads - it can only go horribly wrong!!) Many thanks again for the suggestion TonyS |

It may be as simple as arranging a friendly to clear this issue up: and then just be prepared to stop the game frequently to show them that they have to not track back so far.
Or you may need to have your most vocal player in the back (if you have one) who can tell them to get up. I've never had this problem, though...
