Default Dealing with direct play

I coach an under tens team that have been successful since their under eight days. We have gained promotions and so are going up a level each season. We are currently second with two games in hand so we are coping with the changes. However now that the boys are growing in size we are coming up against teams who are playing a direct long ball agme at seven a sides. We are more of a passing teamand so the defencders are having to deal consistently with the big kick upfield. I am coaching heading such balls and communication between the defenders and the keeper. has ayone got any tips or drills to assist me in this?

Communication is vital, trying to get them to place their headers towards wings, and then getting other players to win any loose balls. Whatever you want them to be able to do should be the basis of your exercise. Go with a SSG, overload with attackers in area, and start each dead ball with a long kick to either penalty area, and get your teams to build from the kick.

Maybe you should teach one or two midfielders to drop deep to pick up your defenders headers then encourage them to start an attack once they receive the ball
