Default Finishing; confidence and instinct

Hi,

my under tens are still unbeaten this season, they top their league and are still in the cup. Our keeper and defence are doing really well but we are dependent on one player in particular to socre the goals. At 7 a side most of our goals come from midfield and whoever plays up front struggles. I do all the drills re shooting and finishing anfd they go well in training. The service to them is ok and so i am thinking it is psychological now?

I am preaching confidence and composure to them but it is not coming through in terms of goals. Any ideas?

A few ideas to try.

Remove the pressure from the strker. Before the next match, tell them you are looking for two aspects of being a striker eg. Good positioning and shooting technique. Say you are not interested (at this stage) wether they score or not, but are looking to improve those skills.

Tell them to play for the fun of it, as if in a training match or playing with friends.

Get them to visualise scoring. This is a technique Sven Goran Eriksson uses with pro players. Imagine the goal big and the keeper small, and scoring time and time again. This is a technique I have used with my keepers kicking and he has improved a great deal.

let us know how things go.

Move your scorer to forward. Let the rest of your players see what a scorer looks like playin forward, and it may be easier for them to score/think goal when they're playing up top.

Ok thanks for your thoughts. We came through our quarter final 1-0. I did use the visualisation techniques with them in training a fair bit and we practised our finishing in a relaxed environment. I think it had some impact as one boy who has been struggling all season finished his goal well. I will progress with what you suggested. I did not put my goalscorer up front as he was needed in midfield. However our next league match on the 24th gives me an opportunity to try it, which i will.

^^^^^All your goals coming from midfield??? Isn't it nice having the same problems as Fergie?

Coaching's a pretty simple business, regardless of the level....
