my seven year old son has been playing football for eight months,he has progressed from his local team to the professional city team at his age group. If they gauged these players on ability he would probably be in the top few,but in confidence he would be in the bottom few.
He,s the youngest in the group and although he is tall he,s also slight. I know he will get stronger in time, but has anybody got any suggestions how to increase his confidence. |

I'll be the grinch here, but you have to ask yourself, is this something your boy wants to do. Who got him to sign up? Youth sports can be as much about the parent as the kid, so you have to be aware of what your motivations are. Having said that, 7 is not too young to be exposed to team sports and lots of kids have a great time playing them. If your son is naturally quiet and less exuberant, than I echo Jerzy's thoughts: give him time.

Can you actually coach confidence? This is surely part of his innate psyche and will only improve as he becomes more confident in his own ability through practice and reassurance.
Just don't burden him with some tough expectations, seven is way too young for that as I'm sure you realise and understand.

Thanks for your prompt replies,
My son isn,t at all shy or doesnt lack confidence with his local team where he is captain, but with the representitive team he lacks a bit of confidence. And yes it is most definitely something he wants to do,and not me,he,s soccer mad!.....Trust me on this i,m anything but a pushy parent. |
