Structure

Forward makes a curved run to stay onside, coach makes a straight pass for forward to run onto. The defender chases the forward - only after coach has passed the ball - and tries to stop them scoring. Forward can only finish once they have run through the cones.

PROGRESSION #1 - Ball is played into forwards feet. Forward sets it back to coach and then makes a curved run to stay onside. Coach plays a straight pass for forward to run onto. Defender chases forward - only after coach has passed ball - and tries to stop forward scoring.

PROGRESSION #2 - 15 x 10 meter area just over the halfway line. 3 x attackers v 1 defender. Attackers play keep ball in the area. After 3 passes an attacker must break out of the area to receive a forward pass. Defender gives chase. Introduce new forward and defender and repeat.

Coaching Tips
  • Forward to curve run to be onside
  • Run quickly onto the ball
  • First touch in front towards goal
  • Cut across chasing defender
  • Run quickly with the ball
  • Take the shortest route to goal
  • Use the laces, front of foot when running with the ball
  • Head up and assess GK when getting close to cones
  • Composed accurate finish
  • Follow in for rebounds
Progressions
  • Vary the service to the attackers - pass into feet so first touch is in front. Pass from the side so attacker takes the ball with them. Pass so attacker has to turn. Shorten the distance.
  • Vary the angle of run - start position from wider areas.
  • Play 4 v 2 in a bigger area. Condition to 4 passes before an attacker breaks out
