Half time
This is an opportunity for you as a coach to have an impact on what will happen for the rest of the game. But there is a limited amount of information that the players will be able to cope with. Therefore, make sure you take the time to reflect on your observations and notes of what has actually happened in the game. Discuss with your assistant. Allow the players some time to have a drink, rest and compose themselves before you talk to them.
-
Again, remember the 3C's of communication, Calm, Concise and Clear
-
Be positive and upbeat.
-
Provide positive solutions, not negative reflections
-
If you are going to make any tactical or positional changes, this is a good time to do so because you can explain why the changes have been made and the impact the changes might have on other players' roles and responsibilities.
-
Be careful of addressing individual players during the group team talk. This could cause embarrassment, perceived criticism or favouritism. Talk to individual players quietly and on a one on one basis.
-
Be brief and relevant
-
Finish with an upbeat, motivational message.
-
Regardless of what has happened in the first, good, bad or indifferent. Players should be encouraged to play the game properly and enjoy themselves.
