Game and drill fitness training

By using some imagination and by conditioning the games, drills and practices a coach can structure sessions to ensure the players have to work very hard, replicating or in many cases working much harder than in actual match situations. The impact of this type of fitness training is to develop drills that focus and concentrate on specific areas of soccer fitness, whilst at the same time providing exciting, innovative and technical sessions in which the players work very hard, without actually realising how hard they are working. The following are the types of conditions the coach should look to impose on the drills and games:

  • Limiting the number of touches - a series of two minute games of two touch possession 8 v 8 in half a pitch, with the coach constantly feeding balls onto the pitch to restrict rest periods, provides an excellent aerobic and anaerobic workout
  • Player over loads 4 v 2, 5 v 3 - By making the game or drill an overload, the smaller number of players have to work much harder.
  • Man to man marking - Great for a lung busting work out, particularly if the coach keeps the game supplied with balls to restrict natural rest periods
  • A modified playing area, for example, making the pitch bigger. The bigger the pitch, the harder the players have to work.
  • Extra balls in technical drills - put the players under pressure as they don't have time to switch off. They have to be constantly on the move and be aware of all the balls in play
  • The use of zones to encourage or restrict movement. In a small sided game for example, a condition could be enforced whereas for the attacking team to score all the attackers have to be over the halfway line and for the defending team not to concede a double goal, they all have to be over the halfway line.
  • Use time restrictions - condition the drill to ensure the players work for a specific period of time. This will ensure that the players are working harder, have fewer rest periods and will improve both aerobic and anaerobic fitness

Use fun competitive dribbling, running with the ball and pressurised shooting games to make the players work hard on technical skills whilst improving speed, mobility, power and stamina

To help you and your players have fun while working on fitness, Grassroots coaching.com have designed a whole section of animated soccer fitness games, drills and exercises.
