Coaching Soccer Skills for ball control
The techniques and soccer skills required for effective ball control are hugely important for all players to develop and master.
Training sessions that a coach plans and instigates should focus on developing the following key soccer skills for ball control.
Players should be coached in being able to assess the flight and pace of the ball and to move to get in the line of the ball. Look to improve the players’ ability to immediately control and cushion the ball using the most appropriate surface, such as the foot, the thigh, chest and head and decisions on whether to control the ball for themselves or for a team mate. Players should be coached on how to control the ball out of their feet, but in playing distance, away from defenders and into space and on how to protect the ball after the control. After the ball control, the players should focus on the execution of the next action, such as a pass, dribble, run with the ball or shot and coaching sessions should also incorporate team mates understanding of the support requirements after the ball control.
Soccer coaching sessions to develop these key soccer skills for ball control should ensure there are lots of opportunities for the players to be tested with a variety of different paced and height passes, both to the receivers feet and away from their body to encourage their ability to move to get in the line of the ball and assess and react to the pace and direction of the pass – “to make a bad ball a good one”.
Soccer skill tips for ball control
- Coaching Soccer Skills #1 – Prior to receiving the ball, players should be on their toes and alert so they are able to quickly move in any direction the ball comes at them.

- Coaching Soccer Skills #3 – Assess the height, pace, speed and potential bounce of the ball and move and adjust their position to this assessment.
- Coaching Soccer Skills #4 – Based upon this assessment and movement, the player should look to quickly select the safest and most appropriate control surface
- Coaching Soccer Skills #5 – Once the control surface has been selected, the players should relax their body and the selected control surface upon contact with the ball, so the ball is controlled within playing distance, but also out of their feet.
- Coaching Soccer Skills #6 – With the ball in playing distance, the player should look to get their head up to select and execute their next option after the control, to shoot, pass, dribble etc
