Short Range Passing - Soccer Coaching

A very large percentage of passes in soccer are over a short distance, less than 20 yards in length. With younger players playing in small sided games and with fewer players, it is vitally important that soccer coaching sessions focus on the techniques and skills required to improve short range passing and receiving.

Soccer coaching sessions should be planned so that the players have lots of realistic, match like situations to develop these short range passing skills. The soccer coaching sessions should focus on encouraging players to be alert and on their toes. Be aware of where space is, where opposition players are and where team mates are. The requirements to pass accurately over a short distance need a great deal of practice on the correct techniques, to start with these soccer training sessions should unopposed, then gradually introduce opposition and pressure to test these techniques and skills under pressure. Soccer coaching sessions to improve short range passing should also include soccer coaching help for the receiving players and incorporate information on how the players can make decisions about control and pass, first time passing and passing to space or feet.

Soccer Coaching Tips to improve short range passing

  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #1 – Players should always look to control, or have the ball out of their feet and in front of them before the pass
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #2 – This will enable the player to get their head up, assess their passing options and “picture the pass” they are looking to make
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #3 – With the ball in front of them, the player should have a slight angled approach to the ball
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #4 –The player should look to put their non – kicking foot alongside the ball and to be balanced, compact and over the ball
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #5 – Contact with the foot and ball. The players should look to strike the ball with the inside of their foot, keeping their ankle “firm” and strike though the middle and the centre of the ball.
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #6 - Players should have their heads as still as possible and over the ball at point of contact.
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #7 – After striking the ball, the kicking foot should follow through to the target, either a player or space
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #8 – The players should be conscious of and understand the decisions and techniques needed not only for accuracy, but also for the timing and weight of the pass
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #9 – Players will also need to be able to make decisions and understand the factors on whether it is appropriate to control and pass or pass first time
  • Tip - Soccer Coaching #9 – Link to receiving / support player. Receiving player to communicate early, both verbally and with hand gestures where they want the pass
