Soccer Training - Improve Long Range Passing
As players evolve and develop physically, they will play on bigger pitches, with more space and the requirements to be able to make long accurate passes will increase. Coaches will need to be able to plan and coach soccer training sessions that help players in developing their ability to make long, accurate passes, using a range of relevant techniques.
Soccer training sessions that enable the players to have lots of realistic, game like opportunities to practice these long range passing techniques and skills need to be incorporated into a coach’s soccer training programme. These soccer training sessions should also incorporate situations that make the passer get their head up before passing, this will dictate the best long passing technique the player will use and decisions that the players make on whether to hit targets - players or space with the pass.
In a game like situation, if a long pass is made, then supporting players will quickly need to move from one area of the pitch, to another area. Soccer training sessions and drills will also need to incorporate not only the different techniques needed, the decisions on the best techniques to use and where to hit the pass, but also support from players, both to be targets to hit with the pass, but also support players off the ball to support the pass
Long Range Passing – Football Training Tips
- Tip #1 - Soccer Training – The first touch should be out of the feet and in front, enabling the player to get their head up and assess their passing options
- Tip #2 - Soccer Training – With their head up the player can “picture the pass”. This will allow them to make decisions on what opposition are in front of them, where their target players are and whether to hit to a target or space
- Tip #3 - Soccer Training – Decision on the technique of the pass. Long lofted, low driven, swerved pass? Only by getting their head up can they make these decisions.
- Tip #4 - Soccer Training – Technique of the pass. An angled approach to the ball; Non kicking foot, behind and away from the ball
- Tip #5 - Soccer Training – For low driven and lofted passes, the player should look to use their laces, the instep of the foot.
- Tip #6 - Soccer Training –The part of the ball to strike. For low driven passes, strike through the middle, centre of the ball, keep the body low and follow through to the target. For lofted passes, strike through the bottom, centre of the ball, lean back and follow through to the target with the kicking foot.
- Tip #7 - Soccer Training – To swerve the ball the player should look to have a more angled approach, striking the outside of the ball with their big toe and following through in a hooking – in to out – movement
