Soccer skill drills for players

Whilst providing soccer drills and soccer coaching for players is very important. It is equally important that players learn for themselves. Players have a very unique ability to try things themselves, to watch other players and learn by trial and error.

Very often just kicking a ball around with their friends is fun and a learning process. The fact they have to work out for themselves the best way of passing or controlling the ball by having a go themselves, making mistakes and watching and copying other players is a powerful learning medium.

Grassrootscoaching.com have looked at and studied the way soccer players learn and improve. To this end, we have developed a series of soccer drills that are designed as player skill competitions. These soccer drill competitions are designed in such a way that the players themselves take responsibility for organising the soccer drill competitions, organising the areas and applying the rules.

The soccer drill skill competitions are easy to understand, are fun and enjoyable, whilst at the same time, through the structure of the soccer drill competition, focus on a specific skill, which will encourage players to improve the skills needed to successfully participate and compete in the player skill competition.

Whilst the soccer drill skill sessions focus on two players, the soccer drill competition can easily be progressed to include more than two players. The soccer drill skill competitions can also be used by coaches as part of their ongoing soccer training programme. The sessions can also be printed out and given to players and their parents as soccer homework, which the players can practice on their own, with their friends and parents away from the training ground.

Soccer drill competitions – skills covered

  • Soccer Drill challenge - Ball control – Player skill competitions to improve control with the foot, the thigh and the chest and to encourage the players to move to get in the line of the ball, adjust to the flight of the ball and to select the correct control surface and cushion the ball
  • Soccer Drill Competition  - Running with the ball – These player skill competitions are organised so that the player initially has to recognise the space and control the ball into this space, run quickly with the ball, get their head up, be aware of the chasing defender and  be under control while running with the ball
  • Soccer skill Drills - Passing the ball – These passing competitions ensure the players have to get their head up to “picture the pass”, pass the ball accurately and consider the weight and timing of the pass and think about the type of support runs to receive the pass
  • Soccer Drill Competition - Dribbling – Players will need to keep their head up while dribbling, manipulate the ball with the front foot and use changes of pace and direction. The soccer drill competition for dribbling are organised to ensure the players have to use all these dribbling and ball manipulation skills.
  • Soccer skill drill competition - Turning with the ball –The players have to learn how to recognise space to turn into, the technique of turning when receiving the ball and how to turn with the ball away from the direction they are running with the ball
