Soccer Training - Soccer Tactics and Formations
The soccer coaching video on this page gives an introduction to understanding and coaching the 4 - 4 - 2 formation. For many coaches it is the most commonly used formation in soccer, because it is easy for the players to understand their individual roles and how these roles connect to their unit and the team.
From a soccer tactics perspective, the 4 - 4 - 2 system, covers all areas of the pitch in a grid like fashion, with the players having specific responsibilities within their designated areas of the pitch. Many top professional clubs still use this system, but when possession is lost they tend to drop one of the strikers into the hole between the main striker and the midfield, allowing the central midfield players to drop a bit deeper and shield their central defenders.
Grassrootscoaching.com has designed a section on soccer tactics and formations. Categories such as basic and advanced team strategies, formations and the tactical principles required for successful team play are all comprehensively covered. We also demonstrate and explain the soccer strategies behind various systems of play, attacking and defending soccer tactics and formations, and defending and attacking set plays.
