FA Level 1 – Waves Part 3

This progression follows on from the blog “WAVES” start of the practice and “WAVES progessions two and three.  This “Waves” blog demonstrates how the session can progress by incorporating a time trial element, which players love, as it makes the session fun and competitive and a condition where players have run onto a pass in a shooting zone, before shooting first time. The second progression, is to encourage players to pass to a breaking wide player, who crosses for the other players to attack the cross and score.

PROGRESSION 4 – PASS INTO SHOOTING ZONE FOR A FIRST TIME SHOT

ORGANISATION

  • Organise players into groups of threes
  • Organise an area of about 50 yards long, by 20 yards wide. Adjust to suit the age and ability of the players
  • Goals at either end, with goalkeepers
  • Lay out a zone – First line 10 -15 yards from the goal. Second line 10 yards in front of this. The players must shoot first time within this shooting zone, between the two lines.
  • Supply of balls, bibs and maker discs

THE PRACTICE

  • Ball is served from the goalkeeper.
  • The first group of three start by one goal and must decide between themselves how they start, pass, move and progress to shoot at the opposite goal.
  • Coach gives each team of three a set time to progress down the pitch and shoot
  • As the teams get better, the time given to score decreases.
  • All three players must touch the ball at least once as they progress.
  • The ball must be passed into the shooting zone for a player to run onto and end up with a first time shot on goal from within the shooting zone.
  • The shot must be a FIRST TIME SHOT
  • Groups alternate from end to end after shooting
  • Competition is to see which team of three can score the most goals from a first time shot, within the shooting zone, from a given number of attempts, within the time allowed. Rebounds count

COACH TO ENCOURAGE

  • Communication between players, both verbally and with hand gestures
  • Good movement to help the player on the ball and progress down the pitch as quickly as possible.
  • Positive, well timed, accurate passing, particularly the final pass into the shooting zone for the shooting player
  • Timed run to receive pass and shoot first time in shooting zone.
  • Encourage the shooting player to get their head up before shooting to assess the position of the goalkeeper
  • Accurate FIRST TIME shots within the SHOOTING ZONE
  • Rebounds from the goalkeeper
  • Goalkeeping

PROGRESSION 5 –CROSS AND FINISH

ORGANISATION

  • Position a cone, centrally on both shooting lines
  • Coach gives each team of three a set time to progress down the pitch and shoot
  • As the teams get better, the time given to score decreases.  All three players must touch the ball at least once
  • One of the players makes a timed run outside of one of the touchlines to receive a pass
  • Player receiving the ball wide travels with the ball and accurately crosses the ball
  • The two other players make timed runs, near and far post, using the cone to help angle and time their runs.
  • Players look to finish from the cross
  • Competition is to see which team can score the most goals FROM A CROSS and in the time allowed. Rebounds count

COACH TO ENCOURAGE

  • Communication between players, both verbally and with hand gestures
  • Positive, timed, accurate passing
  • One of the players makes a timed run to get outside of the touchline and receive a pass in a wide area: Run with the ball and an accurate cross
  • The two other players make timed runs, near and far post, using the cone to help angle and time their runs.
  • Players look to finish from the cross: Rebounds from the goalkeeper.
