Football Training session to improve shooting for goal

Purpose

To improve accurate finishing when 1 v 1 with the goalkeeper.

 Set Up

  • Area marked out with cones
  • 2 x full sized goals – use poles if necessary
  • Supply of balls

Structure

Player dribbles the ball and when they are 10 – 15 yards away, they look to accurately shoot the ball past the goalkeeper. After shot player goes to the end of the opposite group. Goalkeeper turns around and player from opposite group starts. Drill rotates from end to end

 Key Coaching Tips

  • Dribble the ball quickly
  • Head up to assess goalkeeper position
  • Select finishing technique – accuracy – side foot or power – instep
  • Follow up for rebounds from GK rebounds
  • Goalkeeping

 Safety Information

From a safety perspective, it is important that the coach controls this session. Ensure that after their shot the players go to the end of the opposite group and that everyone is out of the way and that the goalkeeper is ready before the next player starts. A simple way is to make sure the players fully understand that nobody starts until the coach gives the verbal instruction.
