There are three areas of practical coaching that a candidate must understand and practice. These being:

  1. Functional Practice
  2. Phase of Play (POP)
  3. Small Sided Games

Before coaching any of the above practices, a football coach will need to understand the following:

PRINCIPLES OF COACHING AND LEARNING

Which will include developing their knowledge and understanding of:

  • Organisation
  • Coaching and Learning Styles
  • Practical Examples

EXAMPLES OF THE PRACTICAL CURRICLUM OF FUNCTIONAL PLAY

Principles in Defending:

  • Defending as individuals, units and as a team
  • Deny, Deflect, Delay and Defend
  • Pressure, Cover and Balance
  • Compactness
  • Tracking Runners
  • Recovery runs

Principles of attacking play:

  • Movement to create and exploit space as individuals and as a team
  • Creative play
  • Creating Overloads
  • Switching the point of the attack
  • Attacking from Crosses
  • Crossing
  • Attacking Areas
  • Finishing
  • Shooting
  • Long Range Shooting
  • Close Range Shooting
  • Wide Flank Play

EXAMPLES OF THE PRACTICAL CURRICULUM FOR PHASES OF PLAY

  • Creating and Exploiting Space
  • Running with the Ball
  • Creating Space in the Middle Third
  • Movement and Interchange
  • Movement and Receiving
  • Combination Play to Finish
  • Wide Players Responsibilities
  • Defending, Responsibilities in Different Areas of the Attacking Third, Midfield Third and Defending Third
  • Improve Quick Play – (One Touch Play, attacking third)
  • Passing, dribbling and Turning to finish (attacking third) Field

  • When to Press the Ball or Drop Off

Counter Attacking

  • Counter Attacking from Deep Positions
  • Counter Attack when gaining possession

Central Attacking Play

Development of Play from the Defending Third
