SSE Wildcats football scheme for girls aged between 5 – 11

At Grassroots level, the The Football Association is on track to double the number of players and fans in the women’s game by 2020.

Baroness Sue Campbell, The FA’s head of women’s football, said: “It’s one thing to write a plan – it’s another to turn it into well-executed action on the ground.

“So I am glad to report we are on track to deliver the big goals we set – but it is still early days.”There are now 6,767 affiliated female teams, up from 6,000 in 2016-17, with a 15.9 per cent increase in Mini-Soccer teams.

There are also one hundred and ninety-nine SSE Wildcats Centres, where 5-11-year-olds can enjoy football on a weekly basis, have been established with a further 772 to open next month.

The initiative offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. For those of us who don’t know about the worthwhile SSE Wildcats scheme, it is designed for 5-11-year-old girls to “Have Fun, make friends and play football”

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football sessions take place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends, and provide a safe environment where girls can try football for the first time.

The initiative aims to inspire participants to engage with football, meet new friends, develop fundamental skills, learn new things and create the foundation for a lifelong love of football.

Alongside the football for girls activities, there will also be opportunities for the attending parents, carers and siblings to engage with sport in ‘Family Sessions’, e.g. Soccercise/Walking football at the same time.

Each SSE Wildcats club will be run in conjunction with local County FAs and utilising qualified coaches and local facilities to offer girls a location nearby where they can get involved.

SSE Wildcats has been established in partnership with SSE, supporters of girls’ football participation and sponsor of the SSE Women’s FA Cup, with support from UEFA, FIFA and the Youth Sport Trust.
