Football coaching Game

A fast moving, exciting pass and move football coaching game. There are two teams. One team defends the three mini goals and one team defends the central triangle goal. Play lots of games and reverse the roles of the teams.

Organisation

  • Pitch size a minimum of 30 x 20 yards to a maximum of 40 x 25 yards – adjust to suit the age, ability and number of players
  • Two teams of 4 or 5 players
  • Three mini goals
  • A triangle goal in the middle of the pitch
  • If the ball goes out of play, the coach who has a supply of footballs quickly restarts play

Football Coaching Game Structure

  • One team defend the 3 mini goals and try and score through the central triangle goal by passing through the goal to a team mate
  • The other team defend the central triangle goal – they must nominate a GK and try and score through any of the 3 mini goals
  • If the ball goes out of play, the coach who has a supply of footballs quickly restarts play

Progressions

  • Make the pitch area bigger or smaller to change the type of passing and space available for the players
  • Rotate the teams often and play lots of short sharp games

Key Coaching

  • Good communication between team mates
  • Patience with the passing and movement, try and keep possession until there is an opportunity to score
  • Accurate, well timed and weighted passes
  • Movement to find space and to recognise which goal is less well defended
  • Players to play with their heads up and be aware of what is happening around them.
  • Good decisions on which goal to attack and try and score or to switch play and try and score in a less well defended goal
  • Defenders to work hard, to work as a team and to communicate
